Ruined city beneath storm clouds with fortress, soldiers, and smoking factories

Which book’s world would be the absolute worst to live in?

I could pick any number of dystopian novels, such as 1984, The Handmaid’s Tale, or The Hunger Games, that depict oppressive governments, societal or environmental collapse, or technological subjugation through media control and widespread surveillance.

I could also pick the Books of Judges, Joshua, or Deuteronomy, which feature some of the Bible’s most violent, blood-soaked narratives.

But these only scratch the surface.

The book that describes the absolute worst world to live in hasn’t been written yet. That’s because we’re still living it.

Some day someone (or a collaboration) will compile a book of the most stupid, violent, corrupt, bloodthirsty, oppressive, surveilled, genocidal, patriarchal, misogynistic, infanticidal, sexually voilent, dishonest, uncharitable, inhumane, vengeful, gullible, uncivil, ostentatious timeline in history. This generation will be the book’s main characters.

Who among us will be recorded as willing participants, indifferent observers, or unfortunate victims? Will there be any heroes?

Hmmm…. I am going to plump for Stephen Donaldson’s The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, especially the second series.
