Emotional landscapes: they puzzle me

There was a time I was really captivated by Kate Bush. There was something about her voice that never failed to grab my attention. Bush was easily my favourite female singer for many years.

In the late 80s, I was introduced to The Sugarcubes, the band that acquainted me with Björk, a singer from Iceland. Although it was around this time that I started to get into alternative music, I didn’t take much notice until Björk went solo and released her debut album Debut in 1993.

The singles Human Behaviour, Big Time Sensuality and Venus As A Boy off Björk’s debut album remain some of my favourite songs, grouped with Army Of Me, It’s Oh So Quiet, and Hyperballad off her second album, Post, in 1995. Her third studio album, Homogenic, was more experimental and featured trip hop and electronica blended with a wide use of stringed instruments

I’ve been playing various mixed versions of the single Jóga off this album. It may be my new favourite tune… until something else dazzles me.

The blog title comes from the lyrics of Jóga:

All these accidents that happen
Follow the dot, coincidence
Makes sense only with you
You don’t have to speak, I feel

Emotional landscapes
They puzzle me
The riddle gets solved
And you push me up to

This state of emergency
How beautiful to be
State of emergency
Is where I want to be…

Incidentally, Kate Bush is still my favourite vocalist, but she now shares that honour with Björk. They’re followed closely by Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Hope Sandoval, Tori Amos, and Dolly Parton, who may or may not shock you.
