I contracted some kind of bacterial infection during my Kruger National Park trip the previous week. I came back with a nasty cough which was generating a lot of phlegm. I also had a sore throat and it seemed like my ears were blocked. I had even lost my voice.
While taking antibiotics among other medications to fight this off, I have been writing furiously as a sort of distraction.
On Sunday I was horrified to discover that I could only hear music clearly from the right speakers when I turned on my stereo system. There was something clearly wrong with my left ear. For an audiophile this was rather annoying, but also deeply concerning.
Later on Sunday evening there was a completely new development. I started hearing static in my left ear. The static has been constant ever since.
Then, inexplicably last night while watching something on YouTube, I heard a clear burst of strange sounds at broken intervals in my left ear that lasted for maybe ten seconds or more. It was reminiscent of the sound made by those old dial-up modems.
I suspected that I may be developing tinnitus and it was was probably related to my infection. Either that or an alien civilization is trying to make contact with me.
Either way, what the absolute bloody hell…
