Bondi Beach good guy without a gun…

The tragic shooting incident at Australia’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, which claimed the lives of at least 16 people, including a child and one of the shooters, is utterly reprehensible and is rightfully being widely condemned around the world.

Although investigations are ongoing, it appears that those attending a Jewish Hanukkah event were targeted. Meanwhile, some wretched individuals, led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the ICC for war crimes, are using this appalling attack as an opportunity to accelerate their Zionist propaganda campaign, continue weaponising antisemitism, and inflame tensions and hatred.

Fortunately, others are hailing a local hero, Ahmed Al Ahmed, a Syrian immigrant, for bravely tackling and disarming one of the shooters. Regretably, Ahmed was wounded in the process and is currently undergoing surgery. However, in the process, this courageous man has unintentionally disproved the grotesque lie propagated by Wayne LaPierre, the former CEO and Executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

LaPierre, widely despised around the world for his pro-gun advocacy and lobbying, is regarded as one of those primarily responsible for the proliferation of guns in the U.S., which are used in regular mass shootings. In 2012, a week after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, he was quoted as saying, “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.” The quote is often rephrased as “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

Although this narrative has been debunked by research, it continues to be used by gun nuts as justification for their dubious passion. Of course, our hero, Ahmed Al Ahmed, on the opposite side of the world, has now also provided visual evidence that a good guy without a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun.

This aside must, however, not distract from the tragedy at hand, but reaffirm that guns paired with hatred, whatever the origin, is a recipe for disaster.

  1. Hi Lenny. I agree with every word. We may be on opposite sides of the world but hatred is the same wherever we live. Thank you so much for highlighting the actions of Ahmed al Ahmed. He is a hero /and/ a champion for all honourable men. Australia won’t forget. Cheers, Meeks
