Remember when the world would anguish over the safety and well-being of even one child?
It didn’t matter what religion, creed, skin color, or privileged circumstances that child was born into. The sanctity of a child’s life was of paramount importance.
That humanitarian concern seems to have evaporated drastically in the last ten months… at least in one country in particular, but in tandem with a handful of other countries who support them.
Over the course of ten months, Israel has been conducting an indiscriminate bombing campaign in Gaza, in which an (under)estimated 41,000 Palestinians have been butchered, mostly women and children. The bombing has only recently spread to Lebanon and Yemen, claiming yet more of the same demographic.
In August of this year, Euro-Med Monitor, a human-rights organisation, reported that 2100 Gazan children under the age of two had been killed since October 7th, 2023. Subsequently, in September this year, the Gaza Ministry of Health released a 649-page document listing the names and identity numbers of 34,344 Palestinians of all ages they had managed to collate officially before it became impossible due to the relentless Israeli bombing campaign.
Out of the total reported by them, 11,355 were of children under the age of 18. The Gaurdian has reported that the first 100 pages of that document lists only children under the age of ten years. Even they acknowledge that many more deaths were not recorded as the identities of these unfortunate men, women, and children could not be confirmed. Yet more bodies still lie unidentified under the rubble of bombed buildings.
We see a lot of (feigned) hand-wringing from mostly US officials over these deaths of children, yet they continue to supply the bombs and approval to ensure it continues unabated. But it’s not just imperialist state warmongers who have lost their humanity completely – it’s also ordinary people.
I’m constantly appalled by how many people think that it’s acceptable to kill babies, not to mention young children and women in a warlike situation. Apparently, war is bad, so we must accept without question that baby-killing is a natural consequence, while collateral damage is both necessary and justified.
Of course, it doesn’t help that the Israeli propaganda machine has promulgated that all civilians in Gaza, including babies, are human shields. Consequently, we are expected to accept their deaths as unfortunate but justified. It boggles the mind how this fabrication was used so disingenuously yet so effectively to sway credulous audiences.
The same propaganda machine has also used past appalling injustices subjected on Jews, including the horrific Holocaust, as justification for wanting to ensure their protection and safety. This is perfectly reasonable. However, in the Palestinian context, where Zionist Jews are themselves perpetrators of gross injustices, this justification is both absurd and hypocritical.
Then, there is the frequent claim that Israel has a right to defend itself – a right, I must add that Israel denies its neighbors, especially the Palestinians who they unquestionably oppress through a brutal system of colonial settler apartheid. As expected, they don’t clarify, to any rational degree, why they need to defend themselves against babies and children by blowing them up into unrecognisable bits.
But here’s the truly insane bit. Those who apologize for Israel’s psychopathic behavior frequently engage in pleading with the unconverted to accept it and join them in granting Israel blanket permission to continue their unrestrained killing spree – just as the American government already has.
It’s truly insane how apologists for Israel think their absurd and frantic rationalizations for genocidal behavior are anything but bigotry and ignorance. They really have very twisted delusions about Israel’s divine and/or legal right to commit indiscriminate mass murder and other atrocities.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir set the tone for this type of mentality and shoddy thinking when she famously stated in her autobiography:
When peace comes we will perhaps in time be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons. Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.
It’s absurd to claim that you’re being forced to kill children. It’s even more ridiculous to expect the world to bestow you with the right to kill babies and children to secure your safety.
A very succinct summation Lennie. Well done.

Thanks Raj. I wrote this full of the kind of anger that I try hard to avoid.

To them, they are not children, they’re not even humans. You are right, this is a ridiculous thing for people to be okay with. Good on you to speak out about this. Bless you.
