If, after six months of death and destruction raining down from the skies, you still don’t know that a humanitarian crime of outrageous proportions is unfolding in the Middle East, I think I understand why.
I have observed, with much dismay, that lies and propaganda travel at lightning speed. Worse, it is consumed with great avarice by willing gluttons with a sugar-like addiction. But worse still, it is spread further, usually by self-serving interests backed by lots of dishonest money.
The truth, on the other hand, has to rely on what is effectively the ailing postal service. Its invariably bitter taste doesn’t find much favor with those accustomed to a steady diet that confirms their biases.
By truth, I mean the observable or objective truth, not someone’s biased version of it.
We don’t have to agree that a population is being massacred. We don’t have to call it a genocide. We don’t have to accept the numbers of dead and injured reported daily. We don’t have to believe that entire cities are being flattened into rubble. We don’t have to believe that people are starving.
We don’t have to agree that our elected officials are stifling free speech. We don’t have to agree that politicians are both crooked and actively stifling free speech.
We just need to observe and be objective. That’s a simple task. We’re capable human beings, after all.
We just need to agree that dropping 2000-pound bombs on defenseless women and children is morally indefensible. We just need to agree that the number, any number, of human casualties caused through violent means, is objectively inhumane. We just need to agree that labeling it does not objectively change its vile nature.
We just need to observe that 2000-pound bombs destroy buildings indiscriminately. We just need to observe that blowing up human beings is never right or justified. We just need to observe that preventing humanitarian aid from reaching desperate individuals will cause starvation. We just need to observe when authorities enact laws that criminalize free speech.
We just need to observe how authorities brutally crack down on students exercising their right to protest. We just need to observe when authorities attempt to ban media like TikTok. We just need to question why paid politicians who are public servants need donations. We need to observe where the donations come from.
It’s not hard to observe who’s on the right side of history, morality, and common decency. You’re a human being capable of learning and modifying your behavior.
Ultimately, though, you don’t have to wait for the truth to reach you. You can meet it halfway. Better still, you can be the vehicle that makes it travel faster.
Your choice!
Hear hear!
