You’re not to be so blind with patriotism that you can’t face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it or says it.
–Malcolm X
As it becomes increasingly apparent that a genocide is indeed unfolding in Gaza, many of those who were once firm apologists for Israel are either changing their stance or relenting, even if grudgingly.
Even those who were once silent on the matter, for whatever reason, are now publicly affirming their repugnance for Israel’s 20-month indiscriminate mass killings and destruction of property in the Gaza Strip. It is heartening that many of these individuals are prominent figures whose “coming out” of sorts has emboldened others to do likewise.
Matthew Miller is one such person who recently caught my eye. Miller was a particularly repulsive government lackey who masqueraded as a spokesperson for the Biden administration. While Biden funded the genocide in Gaza, Miller performed a sterling job of deflecting and denying every question from the press that sought to expose Israel’s murderous and vengeful rampage in Gaza, all while wearing a devilish smirk on his face. This earned him the nickname of Count Smirkula.
Miller is no longer employed as one of the many faces of US hypocrisy and is consequently singing a different tune. Although he still refused to admit that Israel’s conduct constitutes genocide, he goes as far as admitting that they’re committing war crimes.
The startling admission by Miller in this interview that he was compelled to represent only the views of the US government should at least raise eyebrows about the moral turpitude existing in the Biden administration. The fact that he now concedes to having different personal views still begs the question of why he didn’t resign, given that many other morally upstanding officials did so during the Biden administration.
Another rat who is abandoning ship is the right-wing weasel pretending to be liberal, Piers Morgan, who spent months on his YouTube talk show, Piers Morgan Uncensored, lecturing his guests about how Israel had the right to retaliate, while also demanding that they condemn Hamas. During that entire time, he refused to even admit that Israel was conducting war crimes. However, in a recent interview with Israel’s loathsome ambassador to England, Tzipi Hotovely, he charged her country with such.
Incidentally, this Tzipi interview is instructive in how morally repugnant Israel’s propagandists are and how far the country has sunk into depravity.
Also, just recently, Bono, lead singer of the Irish rock band U2, has publicly criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the “far-right fundamentalists” in his government. However, during the entirety of the Gaza genocide, Bono remained silent and was roundly lambasted by former Pink Floyd frontman, Roger Waters who called him “an enormous shit.”
One has to wonder why, only now, prominent people are coming out, either in support of Palestine, criticising Israel, or speaking out on the war crimes being committed.
Are the repeated war crimes and indeed, the genocide, becoming too much to bear (as it should), or are people now suddenly realising that they’re on the wrong side of history, and are afraid of potential consequences?
What Israel is doing is abhorrent. Their cruel and murderous campaign is beyond any pathetic stance of ’defence’. It needs international intervention and US condemnation to end it.

Yeah. Unfortunately, US support is the only thing protecting Israel, and the assurance of this support keeps the genocide going.

We can’t know what motivates anyone. The important factor is simply that we all do the right thing. Great post, Lenny.
