On a recent road trip to the stunning Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, I visited Victoria Bay, just outside George. While wandering aimlessly on foot, I stumbled upon this magnificent recreation of Groot in the backyard of a holiday cottage on a pier adjacent to the bay area.
If you’re not being as inquisitive as I was about the cottages, you could easily miss it, but the enterprising owner obviously went to great lengths to make the driftwood sculpture stand out. Victoria Bay is a tourist attraction on the famous Garden Route to Cape Town, between Knysna and Mossel Bay.
Groot is a familiar fictional character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe who appeared in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers films. He’s famous for uttering the words I Am Groot in the movies voiced by actor Vin Diesel.
From watching the films, I never learned Groot’s full name, which you can get from reading the comics. I don’t suppose His Divine Majesty King Groot, the 23rd Monarch of Planet X, custodian of the branch worlds, ruler of all the shades, would have worked all that well in the movies.
Anyway, I wish him a long and enjoyable vacation in the Eastern Cape.
