Not even debatable

Amidst the fallout from last week’s Biden-Trump debate, CNN reports that Biden’s family will advise him to stay in the presidential race despite all the negative publicity.

Even though I, like many others, have no personal stake in the US elections, the final selection of a winner does affect the rest of the world. Unfortunately, in recent years, the effect has been negative. For some countries, it is catastrophic.

Watching the debate has been both amusing and instructive. There is no doubt that Biden was a dismal failure. His age, tied to his mental acuity, has been openly questioned since the shit show was broadcast last Thursday. Trump did not come off any better – he merely confirmed his well-known status as a bigot and consummate liar.

The problem for America, though, is not that Trump lies with impunity – the problem is that around a third of the population either believe him or don’t actually care about the lies. The other obvious problem is that Biden is consciously helping Trump’s grotesque bid for a second term. How conscious he actually is, is anyone’s guess.

A CBS/YouGov poll revealed how far support for Biden has plummeted since the debate. A shocking 72% of registered voters believe Biden does not have the mental and cognitive health to serve as President. The same percentage of registered voters think he should not run for president. Meanwhile, only 54% of registered Democratic voters think he should run for president.

Is it any wonder, then, that the Vote Blue, No Matter Who crowd, are losing their freaking minds? The spin on Biden’s performance from these quarters is not only comical, it is increasingly desperate.

I have now resigned myself to the fact that it does not matter who the US president is. Policy on either side, Democratic or Republican, will remain the same – it will be determined, as it has been done for decades, by whichever special-interest group is funding both the presidential candidates and lawmakers in Congress. It’s essentially a deeply corrupt system, which, through continued voter support, is maintained election cycle after election cycle.

There is no doubt, however, that given Biden’s failings, both cognitively and as far as his inhumanity towards Palestinians goes, Trump will be an infinitely worse president. Worse for the Middle East and for the entire world. He broadcasts his intentions regularly.

It is, therefore, not even debatable whether Biden should run for president. Trump looks like he could win handily. Biden must be replaced with someone who can offer the registered voter base a viable alternative and a chance to consign Trump to the dustbin of bigot history.
