What's at the top of the food chain

The history of our race, and each individual’s experience, are sown thick with evidence that a truth is not hard to kill and that a lie told well is immortal.

Mark Twain

This morning, a Facebook regular posed this question in a group post:

I wonder what will happen if we find something that takes our place at the top of the food chain.

Given world events currently, especially the appalling situation in the Middle East and with America flexing its imperialist muscles again, the answer seemed like a no-brainer, at least the “something” part. It’s so fucking obvious.

Hate! It’s not taking our place at the top; it already has.

Hate is alive, real, and debilitating, consuming all before it. Hate moved into the penthouse suite on the top floor of the food chain, living rent-free, and we have willingly bowed down before it. A dear cousin reminded me that you must care enough about something to hate. However, to my mind, hate only gives you the illusion of caring. She proposed indifference as a replacement.

But is indifference worse than hate? That’s debatable, but I know that hate provokes action, usually the kind that causes harm to others.

And what would happen when our domination of the food chain is toppled?

What if I told you it has already happened? Right now, a massacre of a scale unseen in recent times is unfolding in Gaza. It’s truthfully a genocide (let’s stop pretending that the jury is still out on that) being directed by hate. This is how I envision the food chain to look like in Israel:

Hate is the driving force of the Israeli government’s policies of settler colonialism, apartheid and displacement of the Palestinian people. The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) is the enforcer of this policy. Israeli citizens are not mere spectators. They are not only active participants, cheering their government’s war effort; a reasonably large proportion make up the IDF that is carrying out the massacre in Gaza. In December, polling conducted by a popular local newspaper, Haaretz, indicated a strong appetite for war by the population, and not much has changed since then. A significant percentage think that the IDF is not forceful enough. Is the blood of more than twenty thousand Palestinians, mostly women and children, not enough?

In recent reports, the IDF has admitted to running a sick Snuff Channel of atrocities (war crimes) being committed in Gaza on the messenger App Telegram for consumption by Israeli citizens. It’s not hard to imagine how a militaristic society feeds and thrives on this type of hateful affirmation. But the hate goes much further than humiliating the Palestinian population; it intends to ensure that they don’t even survive it, as this recent YouTube excerpt from Al Jazeera reveals:

Israeli forces open fired on a crowd of Palestinians during aid handout

Propping up the food chain are the usual casualties of human dominance, with a humiliating new addition – the Palestinians themselves. Such is the hatred in this psychotic society that Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant decreed that Palestinians are “human animals.” Would the Palestinians who provided a safe harbour for Jews fleeing antisemitism and the European pogroms all those decades ago have so unceremoniously consigned them to the bottom rung of the food chain? I honestly don’t think so because hate was not in their make-up.

While this does not complete the picture of the horrors emanating from hate, it is one of the most adverse examples of such in the world right now.
